Geometry - Shadow Problem

Content Standards:

TSWBAT...

... measure quantities using appropriate units, instruments, and methods.

... apply mathematical knowledge to real world situations.

... estimate amounts and determine levels of accuracy needed.

... set up and simplify ratios.

Process Standards:

TSWBAT...

... organize work.

... collaborate with peers.

Shadow Problem Task

1)Students will be asked to go outside and estimate the height of a light pole using measurements of two shadows; the pole, itself, and a meter stick.

2) Using a tape measure, students (in groups of three) will measure the length of the shadow of the meter stick held perpendicular to the ground.

3) The groups will then repeat the process on the light pole.

4) Using the topics of ratios and proportions discussed in class, they are to estimate the height of the pole using the calculations they have made.

5) The calculations are to be recorded on a sheet of paper and turned in.

The groups will be assessed on the following criteria:

1) Accuracy of calculations.

2) Organization of work.

3) Clarity

4) How well they worked together (based on teacher observations).
