Volcano Underwater Lab

Objective

  • Students will be able to draw inferences from this lab activity. Also they will have to work in groups, given certain tasks, to finish the lab. They are to work not only on communication, but also on compromising.

Materials

  • 100 ml beaker
  • 50 ml beaker
  • hot water
  • bottle filled with ink
  • string

Activities/Procedure/Questions

  1. give each member a job:
    • recorder -> write the answers to the lab
    • parts person -> collect and maintain all materials from the lab
    • technician-> perform all the tasks for the lab

Make a hypothesis on what is going to happen when you place the bottle of ink in a beaker filled with hot water.

  1. Parts person is to get all of the materials and place hot water in the 50ml beaker
  1. Technician, you need to do the following:
    1. pour the hot water from the 50ml beaker into the 100 ml beaker;
    2. tie the string around the ink bottle;
    3. place the ink bottle into the hot water, lowering it in by the string.
  1. What is happening to the ink? (Draw and describe what is happening.)

  1. Let the ink sit there for 15 minutes, and see if there are any changes in the ink pattern. If so then explain what your group thinks is happening? (Talk about it before you write your answer down.)
  1. What is this model suppose to represent in the ocean?

  1. What islands are volcanoes responsible for creating?

8. How did the ink flow differ when the water was hot and when the water was cold?

Volcano Criteria

After your group finishes your lab report, everyone in your group is going to be responsible for presenting your findings to the class. In your lab groups you should discuss the questions so that all members are considered knowledgeable in the subject area.

Each member will present at least one question to the class. You should know all of the information in the questions. So just pull the numbers out of a beaker; this will eliminate any problems.

I am going to be looking for clarity of the answers. Your peers will be able to ask questions on your answers, so be prepared.
